About Rev. John Reid
Rev. Reid began pastoring in 1968 while in college and later served two churches, followed by more than 20 years as a Director of Missions for a Baptist association of 50 churches in Western North Carolina. He then devoted the next twenty-five years to professional counseling across a range of settings, including a counseling agency, a Baptist residential cottage serving teenage boys and their families, two different mental health agencies, and public schools. He has also worked with English-speaking clients across the United States and with international clients in many regions of the world, including Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean, and North America.
He earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling in 1976 and became licensed in 2007 as an LCMHC, which means he is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. He also completed a five-year training program in Gestalt Therapy through the Appalachian Gestalt Training Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, and maintains his license through ongoing continuing education.
Rev. Reid supports adults and children facing concerns such as depression, anxiety, mood-related challenges, ADHD, low self-esteem, relationship and family stress, divorce and blended family issues, and anger management. He emphasizes that mistakes and setbacks are part of being human, and that growth is possible through understanding, forgiveness, and moving forward. When providing Christian counseling, he draws on the Bible as a supportive text rather than a tool for judgment, with a focus on love and care in all its expressions.

Therapeutic Approaches That Translate Well to Online Care
Rev. John Reid draws from several evidence-informed approaches that can be effective in online therapy. Client-Centered Therapy focuses on creating a supportive space where clients feel heard and respected, helping them clarify what they want, strengthen self-understanding, and move toward meaningful change. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps clients notice patterns between thoughts, feelings, and actions, and then practice practical strategies that can be especially helpful for stress, anxiety, depression, and day-to-day coping. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) adds skills for handling intense emotions, improving communication, and building distress tolerance during difficult moments.Finding the right approach is part of the process. Rev. Reid collaborates with clients to identify goals, preferences, and what has or has not worked in the past, then adjusts the pace and tools to match the client’s needs and comfort level. This flexible style can be helpful for individuals, couples, or families navigating relationship concerns, grief, anger, or life transitions.
Online therapy also makes it easier to stay consistent with support. Clients can connect through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or text-based messaging, which can be especially useful for busy schedules, travel, or times when meeting in person feels difficult.
